[Toss Up] Better Trip: Kansas the State or The Point of Know Return?

Posted by Travis Travel - 0 views | Listed under: Low cost travel, Travel Advice

On my trip into work today i heard the seldom played Kansas tune “Point of Know Return” on my cars sound system.   I own the Point of Know Return LP and i really enjoy the artwork on the cover.   It is a picture depicting an old sailing vessel which seems to have sailed to the end of a flat ocean which then ends abruptly with a nice cascading waterfall into outerspace.   There is also an intimidating sea serpent surrounding the sphere.    While this Point of Know return with a sailing ship seems a little far fetched it seems a lot more realistic than the other famous modern day old sailing ship scene which is the scene from Goonies where One Eyed Willy’s ship appears out of nowhere.

After thinking about how awesome the album cover is I then thought how would this scene depicted on the album stack up to the actual state named Kansas.     So the purpose of this essay would you rather take a trip to  the Point of Know return or would you rather take a trip to Kansas, the 34th     state.

Here’s a little breakdown of Kansas. Its in the Midwest, it’s a very flat place,  they grow lots of wheat,  which while it may be used to make some tasty dishes.  It is not very exciting to drive past as it looks like dead grass , it is also grown in flat areas which are also terribly boring to drive through.    So if we’re just picking based on topography alone – the Point of Know Return wins hands down – Yes the ocean is flat , and some wise men say this is the last known photograph of Christopher Columbus sailing off of the world - but it is an ocean with a bonus  waterfall.     You might say my hatred of landlocked states had something to do with this.  I will say that has nothing to do with it.  A recent tripenator.com poll shows that Kansas is the 2nd worst state to drive through after Nebraska.   Iowa was a close 3rd but driving past corn beats driving past wheat.

Attractions in Kansas seem on the dull side – there are no legitimate sports teams.   Kansas City hates Kansas so much that most of it is in neighboring Missouri, which is a fairly brutal state itself.  This speaks volumes about a state.    The  most famous person from Kansas is Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ.

Another issue i am having with Kansas is their state flag.

lying flag
lying flag

The flag is a blatant lie.    Has pictures of legit mountains, water , a scene from Oregon trail, and Kansas in HUGE LETTERS.   After  more research the Oregon trail part is factual – Yes the Oregon trail went through Kansas, however this was typically the easy part of the game when all you had to do was cross a river and nobody was starving or dying of Gonorrhea.    You only hunted because you were so bored with riding through Kansas.

So why do they feel the need to spell out Kansas??   Its because the scene looks way to cool to be Kansas because a place like that does not exist in Kansas.    Most people would guess Sweden and possibly Guatemala with the topography depicted in the scene.     They might as well go for a lovely Hawaiian setting and keep the KANSAS stamp.    Anyone going to Kansas after checking the flag out was disappointed.      I know one thing if Kansas the state used the Point of Know Return album cover as their flag it would probably be more accurate.
So in conclusion I decided that the Point of Know Return would clearly make for a better trip.     It was very obvious that Kansas the state has very little going for it from the start and the Point of Know return is simply unbelievable.    Even if you couldnt get there by sailing ship,  just  staring at the Album cover itself for hours seems like a better activity than taking a trip to Kansas

driving through kansas blows unless you are traveling during the dates of June 27-July 5 in which you can legally purchase fireworks. any trip is more fun when fireworks are involved

  9. KANSAS 4 LIFE! is this even up for discussion? you are comparing a state, my state, kansas, to a hypothetical ship/know where trip? can you even book a trip to point of know retrun? can it even be round trip if you can actually book a ticket? so many questions that need answering before i can pick a side… but im leaning toward kansas
